What You Should Know Before Exporting Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a native spice from Indonesia, which has succeeded in entering the European Union export market and becoming the second largest exporter of nutmeg after Vietnam. The largest nutmeg production centers in Indonesia are in the provinces of Aceh, North Sulawesi, West Papua, Maluku, and North Maluku.

European Union Regulation No. 165 of 2010 outlines several regulations that exporters must consider when exporting nutmeg to the European Union. One of these regulations sets the maximum limits for aflatoxin B1 at 5 mcg/kg and the total aflatoxin at 10 mcg/kg. It is crucial to adhere to these limits to ensure compliance with the European Union’s standards for nutmeg imports.

The fungus Aspergillus flavus produces aflatoxin, a toxic microorganism that is the main factor responsible for nutmeg damage. Scientific evidence has shown that aflatoxin can cause a disorder in the human body known as aflatoxicosis, which leads to symptoms such as prolonged nausea, vomiting blood, liver damage, cancer, and even death.

How did Aspergillus flavus appear? Aspergillus flavus appears due to less-than-ideal nutmeg cleaning, drying, and storage conditions. This is why, under European Union Regulation No. 24 of 2016, nutmeg-exporting countries are required to submit a “food safety and health certificate” before exporting nutmeg to the European Union. This certificate ensures that the nutmeg meets the necessary standards for food safety and quality, mitigating the risk of Aspergillus flavus contamination.

The Most Important Properties in Nutmeg

1. Antibacterial Properties

Nutmeg has antibacterial properties which are very beneficial for body health. Most antibacterial properties are able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli which has the potential to cause diarrhea. Besides that, the antibacterial properties in nutmeg can also prevent the appearance of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Streptococcus mutans.

The study titled “Antibacterial Activity of Myristica Fragrans Against Oral Pathogens” revealed that nutmeg extract exhibited a powerful antibacterial effect against the tested oral pathogens, including Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus salivarius. Furthermore, the extract demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against the Porphyromonas gingivalis bacterium, which is associated with dental cavities and gingivitis.

2. Anti-inflammatory Properties

The anti-inflammatory properties of nutmeg actively contribute to the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammation, including conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. These remarkable anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to specific compounds known as monoterpenes, including sabinene, terpineol, and pinene. These compounds effectively work within the body to reduce inflammation, offering relief and promoting better health.

The study titled “Nutmeg Oil Alleviates Chronic Inflammatory Pain Through Inhibition of COX-2 Expression and Substance P Release in Vivo” demonstrated the beneficial effects of nutmeg extract oil on rats with inflammation. The results revealed that the rats showed improvement after receiving injections of nutmeg extract oil. These positive outcomes can be attributed to the presence of cyanidin and phenolic compounds, which possess potent anti-inflammatory properties.
